How do I clean my shoes? Because our platforms collection primarily features soft, water-friendly EVA foam alongside occasional synthetic or fabric strap details, care is simple. EVA platforms can be easily rinsed directly with water and wiped down with a mild soapy sponge, then towel-dried and left to air-dry away from direct heat. Any fabric or synthetic strap details should be gently spot-cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

Material Care FAQ

Canvas / Fabric Upper

Q: How do I clean canvas or fabric Rocket Dog shoes? A: Remove loose dirt with a dry brush first. Mix a small amount of mild detergent (like Woolite or a few drops of dish soap) with warm water, and use a soft-bristle brush to gently scrub the fabric in a circular motion. Wipe away suds with a clean, damp cloth, then stuff the shoes with paper towels and air-dry away from direct heat or sunlight.

Q: Can canvas sneakers go in the washing machine? A: It's best to hand-clean canvas styles rather than machine wash, machine washing can loosen glue bonds and warp the shape over time. If you do machine wash, use a cold, gentle cycle, remove laces and insoles first, place shoes in a mesh laundry bag, and always air-dry, never tumble-dry.

Q: What household items work on canvas stains? A: A paste of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and water lifts light stains and scuffs. A melamine-foam sponge works well on canvas without damaging the fabric. Diluted white vinegar (acetic acid) helps with odor and mild discoloration.

Q: What should I look for in a commercial cleaner? A: A sneaker cleaner with a mild, non-bleaching surfactant base (often listed as coconut-derived cleansers or decyl glucoside) lifts dirt without stripping color or dye from the fabric.

PU (Faux Leather) & Faux Suede/PU-Suede Finish

Q: How do I clean faux leather (PU) shoes? A: Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove surface dirt. For deeper grime, use a mild soap-water solution on the cloth, then wipe dry immediately with a separate dry cloth, PU shouldn't sit wet, since excess moisture can cause the coating to crack over time.

Q: How do I clean the suede-finish (PU-suede) styles? A: This is a synthetic suede look on a PU base, not real suede, so avoid soaking it. Brush gently in one direction with a soft brush or a clean, dry toothbrush to lift dust and restore the nap. For scuffs, a clean pencil eraser or crepe-rubber block works well since the material won't absorb liquid the way real suede does.

Q: What household items can I use? A: A microfiber cloth with a drop of dish soap handles most everyday dirt. A dry toothbrush is a good stand-in for a suede brush on the textured finishes.

Q: What should I look for in a commercial cleaner/conditioner? A: For smooth PU, a cleaner-conditioner containing glycerin or a silicone-based conditioning agent (dimethicone) keeps the surface flexible and prevents cracking. For the suede-finish styles, look for a cleaning kit with a rubber/pumice-based cleaning block rather than a liquid, since liquid cleaners can leave water spots on this texture.

Q: Can I use a protectant spray? A: Yes, a spray containing a fluoropolymer or silicone water-repellent applied before first wear helps prevent staining on both smooth PU and suede-finish styles.

Raffia / Straw-Look Fabric

Q: How do I clean raffia-style shoes? A: Raffia is a natural or straw-look woven material and should never be soaked. Wipe gently with a barely damp cloth and mild soap, working in the direction of the weave. Blot, don't rub, to avoid fraying the fibers.

Q: What if there's a stain? A: Spot clean only, using a soft cloth dabbed in soapy water. Let air-dry fully before wearing again, away from direct sun which can dry out and split the fibers.

Q: What should I look for in a commercial cleaner? A: A natural-fiber cleaner formulated with a mild plant-based (saponin or coconut-derived) surfactant is gentler on woven fibers than standard shoe cleaners.

Mesh / Knit Upper

Q: How do I clean mesh sneakers? A: Use a soft brush with a mild detergent-water solution, working gently since mesh can snag or stretch if scrubbed too hard. Rinse the soap out with a barely damp cloth rather than running water directly over the shoe.

Q: Can mesh shoes be machine washed? A: Yes, more safely than most materials, mesh tends to hold up well to a cold, gentle cycle in a mesh laundry bag. Air-dry only; heat can warp the knit structure.

Q: What household items work? A: A soft toothbrush and diluted dish soap are usually enough. A baking soda paste helps with odor control between washes.

Nylon / Webbing

Q: How do I clean nylon or webbing details? A: Nylon is durable and can be wiped down with a soapy, damp cloth. For heavier soil, a soft brush with detergent works, followed by a clean-water rinse-wipe and full air-dry.

Q: What should I look for in a commercial cleaner? A: A technical-fabric wash containing a non-detergent surfactant (alkyl polyglucoside) cleans without leaving a residue that can affect nylon's water resistance.

PVC (Jelly-Look Material)

Q: How do I clean PVC/jelly shoes? A: PVC is water-friendly, simply rinse with water and wipe with a soapy cloth or sponge. Dry with a towel and let air-dry the rest of the way.

Q: What household items help restore shine? A: A small amount of mineral oil (found in baby oil or petroleum jelly) rubbed on with a soft cloth restores shine and prevents the PVC from looking dull or cloudy over time.

Q: Anything to avoid? A: Avoid high heat (like direct sun or a heater) for drying, PVC can warp or become brittle.

Synthetic Fur / Faux Shearling

(Note: all fur and shearling trim used by Rocket Dog is synthetic/faux, this Q&A applies to that faux material.)

Q: How do I clean the faux fur/shearling on Rocket Dog shoes? A: Brush gently with a wide-tooth comb or soft-bristle brush in the direction the fur lays to remove dirt and fluff it back up. For spot stains, use a cloth dampened with a little mild detergent, blot (don't rub), then air-dry and brush again once dry to restore texture.

Q: What household items work? A: A hairbrush or wide-tooth comb (the kind used for human hair) works well for de-matting faux fur without pulling it out.

Q: What should I look for in a commercial cleaner? A: A fabric-safe stain remover with an enzyme-based formula (proteases/amylases that break down organic stains) lifts spots without matting the fibers, apply to a cloth first, never directly onto the fur.

Interior: Memory Foam & EVA Cushioning

Q: How do I clean the memory foam insole/footbed? A: Remove the insole if possible. Sprinkle with baking soda, let sit for a few hours to absorb odor and moisture, then shake or vacuum off. For light stains, dab, don't soak, with a cloth and a mild soap-water mix, since memory foam holds onto moisture.

Q: How do I clean EVA foam midsoles/footbeds? A: EVA is more water-resistant than memory foam. It can be wiped down directly with a damp soapy cloth or even rinsed lightly under water, then air-dried.

Q: What household items help with odor? A: Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) left in the shoe overnight is the most effective at-home odor remedy for both memory foam and EVA. Dryer sheets tucked into the shoe overnight are a common quick fix too.

Q: What should I look for in a commercial odor spray? A: An odor spray built around sodium bicarbonate or a zinc-based odor neutralizer (zinc ricinoleate) actually neutralizes odor rather than just masking it with fragrance, both are safe on memory foam and EVA.

Outsole (Rubber, EVA, TPR, PU, PVC soles)

Q: How do I clean the outsole? A: Use an old toothbrush with a paste of baking soda and water to scrub grooves and treads. Rinse the brush and wipe away residue with a damp cloth.

Q: How do I get the outsole white again? A: A melamine-foam sponge is very effective on rubber and EVA soles for scuffs and yellowing. For deeper discoloration, a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, left on for 10–15 minutes then scrubbed off, works well, test on a small area first since peroxide can lighten some colored soles.

Q: What should I look for in a commercial midsole cleaner? A: A cleaner combining a mild surfactant with a fine abrasive (calcium carbonate or silica-based) lifts ground-in dirt from tread grooves without discoloring the rubber or foam.
